It Takes a Village

to run our successful 501c3 non-profit, the Manitou Springs Heritage Museum. Our Board members are active in many different areas of the Museum’s operation including historic archives, events, programming & tours, promotion & advertising, website management, exhibits, museum store, property/building maintenance, grants & fundraising and operations & personnel. Michael Maio: Board President

Mike is a retired real estate attorney and a registered professional landman. Before moving to Colorado from Cincinnati, Mike was active in and received several awards for social welfare causes helping kids and families and as a founding board member of the Price Hill Historical Society.
Since relocating to Manitou Springs in 2005, Mike has continued volunteering. From 2008-2013, he was den leader for local Boy Scout Troop 18 and served on the Open Space Advisory Committee 2006-2007 and 2015-2021 (chair 2018-2021). Mike received the 2021 Manni Award for service to the community and helps organize the Heritage Brew Festival and the Great Fruitcake Toss.

 

 

Michelle Anthony, AICP: Board Vice President

Michelle retired as senior planner and historic preservation officer with the city of Manitou Springs. She received the 1999 Preservation Pioneer Award from the Historic Preservation Commission and received the first Manni Award for Civic Achievement in 2014.

During her career, Michelle was active in statewide organizations and efforts involving historic preservation and various aspects of planning, including speaking t annual conferences for Colorado Preservation Inc. and the Colorado Chapter of the American Planning Association. Michelle is a founding MSHM board member and has been active in operating the museum since its start.

 

Kevin Abney: Board Treasurer

Kevin was elected to the Board of Historic Manitou Springs, Inc. in 2010 and appointed to the position of Treasurer. He previously served on the board of the Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers of Colorado on the state level and the Bed and Breakfasts of the Pikes Peak Region on the local level. Kevin operated a Manitou Springs Bed & Breakfast until 2009 called The Avenue Hotel. Kevin is a former member of the City’s Historic Preservation Commission and now owns a small home in Manitou Springs.

 

 

 

Rhonda Van Pelt: Board Secretary

Rhonda joined the Board late in 2024 and will focus on the museum’s communications and outreach needs. After earning a bachelor’s degree in art with history and English as minors in 1980, Rhonda returned to college for a degree in mass communications in 1988. She has edited and written for nearly every print journalism outlet in the Pikes Peak region, including nine years as editor of the Pikes Peak Bulletin newspaper. Rhonda previously served on the board of the Business of Art Center (now the Manitou Art Center) in 2010 and 2011. She is passionate about history, art and the Manitou Springs community, and is excited about this opportunity to support the museum.
 
 
 

Lynn Beckner: Exhibits Project Manager

Lynn joined the board in 2024. She spent 35 years working in the computer tech industry at Digital Equipment Corp., Compaq Computers and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Lynn has a background in technical support, technical writing and program management. Her organizational skills and attention to detail have helped produce some high-quality and engaging exhibits at the museum.

Lynn lived in Manitou from 2003-2014 but currently resides on the west side of Colorado Springs. When she retired in 2017, her love of Manitou and its history drew her back to the Manitou Springs Heritage Museum.

 

Craig Cormier: Board Member

Craig is passionate about preserving and sharing the rich history of Colorado, especially the unique stories that shape communities like Manitou Springs. His academic background, as well as a lifelong love for historical artifacts and the personal connections they represent, inspires his commitment to thoughtful stewardship.

Craig believes this museum plays a vital role in connecting past and present, as well as offering easily accessible history and knowledge. He is honored to support the Manitou Springs Heritage Museum’s mission and community impact.

Nancy Hawley: Board Member

Nancy has extensive experience in nonprofit management, financial operations and organizational leadership in California and Colorado. She was CEO/co-founder of Tempo 21 Nursing Services, a multi-state nursing services company, has held key roles such as convention and conference meetings manager for the American Birding Association, public relations and publications director for the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineers, and administrator for St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, now the St. Andrew’s Community Center.

Nancy’s career highlights include leading three chambers of commerce out of financial distress and managing large-scale events and staff teams. She also has held memberships in numerous professional associations.

 

 

Dr. Regina Lewis: Board Member

Regina is a top-rated motivational speaker and a respected expert in leadership development and organizational communication. She works with a wide range of clients, including major Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits and schools. As CEO of ReginaSpeaking, she has made a mark on the global stage, delivering insights and guidance around the world. Regina is also well-versed in strategic planning, media relations and socioeconomic mobility.

A proud retired Air Force veteran, she holds a doctorate in educational leadership and was the communication department chair at Pikes Peak State College. Her dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion has earned her several awards and recognition in academic publications.

 

David Alan McBride Sr.: Board Member

David is a Colorado Springs-based entrepreneur, speaker and founder of Pikes Peak Vacation Concierge. With more than 40 years of experience in sales, marketing and community engagement, David brings a strategic and storytelling-driven approach to preserving and promoting local history.

A former collegiate basketball captain and 2025 Stark County (Ohio) Amateur Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, David’s work centers on legacy, confidence and community impact. He is also the creator and host of “Voices of Manitou,” a podcast dedicated to preserving the rich history of Manitou Springs. Through tourism partnerships, youth mentorship and historical programming, David is committed to ensuring that the stories of Manitou Springs continue to inspire future generations.

 

Manuel HawkWing Pulido: Board Member

Manuel joined the board in 2025. He earned his Ph.D. in art history from the University of North Texas and taught art at Northside High School and UNT. Manuel has also worked as an art handler for the Kimbell Art Museum and the Dallas Museum of Art. With more than 36 years of experience in painting, mural work, photography and sculpture, he has exhibited his work internationally.

Manuel identifies deeply with his Indigenous and Mexican-American roots, which are his greatest inspirations. His most meaningful accomplishment remains his dedication to honoring and preserving his culture and the fading histories of others through his art and spirit.

 

 

Board Advisors

Our Museum relies on the advice of these two former long time Board Members who act as trusted advisors in the areas of fund-raising events and Historic Archives.

Neale Minch: Board Advisor

Neale Minch was a Board Member from 2016-2025. Currently, he advises the Board about fund-raising events. After spending more than 20 years at Hewlett Packard serving in a variety of Business Management and Operations roles, Neale retired in 2015. Neale has lived in Manitou since 2012 and has served on the City’s Historic Preservation Commission.

 

 

 

Shirley Wade: Board Advisor

Shirley Wade is a self-employed antiques dealer and advises the Board about Historic Archives. She is a 31-year retired federal civilian manager serving 15 years managing an Air Force wide program. Upon her return to Manitou in 1995, she became a founding member as a Manitou High School alumnus of the school’s Heritage Hall exhibit that transferred to our Museum. She served in the planning stages of the Manitou Springs Heritage Museum. Shirley is sure the love of Manitou history and antiques took hold during her years at the Cliff House Hotel during the 1940s and 1950s.
