The Manitou Springs Heritage Center and Museum’s History Window features “The Keithley Legacy”. Everard Spencer Keithley was appointed the Supervisor of Pike National Forest in 1926. During his time in the Forest Service, Mr. Keithley plated 25,000 acres of trees in Pike National Forest. He resided in Manitou Springs in what is now called the Keithley Log Cabin District. His wife, Maud M. Keithley, won several National League of American Penwomen awards for her series of children’s books about Packy the Packrat. The best-known book written by Mrs. Keithley, “Packy Climbs Pikes Peak”, was published in 1941 and is considered in some reading circles as a classic for children. The book is currently in our museum bookstore.
