DESCRIPTION:The Manitou Springs Heritage Museum proudly hosts “A Century of Black History Commemoration: The Groves Family and Fannie Mae Duncan.” The exhibit opens 5-8 p.m. Friday\, February. 6. During the opening reception\, local musician Charles Lumpkin will speak about Black History Month and play the Black National Anthem on his saxophone. \nJohn Groves (1840-1902) and Louisa Divers Groves (1861-1943) were born in Virginia and Missouri\, respectively\, and were the parents of Harry Edward Groves (1921-2013)\, who would study at Harvard and become a respected law professor at universities around the nation. \nFannie Mae Duncan was renowned as the founder and owner of the Cotton Club in downtown Colorado Springs\, where her motto was “everybody welcome.” \nVisit our FREE museum.
