Buffalo Soldiers

February 29, 2020 @ 11:00 am12:30 pm

Feb 29th at 11:00 am

The Pikes Peak Library District celebrates Black History Month and the Manitou Springs Heritage Center hosts a presentation by Dennis Moore. Mr. Moore will give an informative presentation on the Buffalo Soldiers.  Buffalo soldiers were African American soldiers who mainly served on the Western frontier following the American Civil War. In 1866, six all-black cavalry and infantry regiments were created after Congress passed the Army Organization Act. Their main tasks were to help control the Native Americans of the Plains, capture cattle rustlers and thieves and protect settlers, stagecoaches, wagon trains and railroad crews along the Western front.

Dennis Moore is a member of the Buffalo Soldiers Memorial Committee, which was established in 2016 and was instrumental in the development of The Buffalo Soldiers Memorial in Colorado Springs and the Buffalo Soldiers Memorial Highway.
